In the US, a group of anarchist workers from Chicago started a strike to ask for an eight-hour day. The maximum claim was “eight hours to work, eight to sleep and eight to house.” The strike spread and an explosion in the riots in the following days, five workers who were designated martyrs of Chicago were falsely charged and sentenced to death. In 1889 II. The Socialist International proclaimed International Workers' Day.
