The lights of the theater are on. Discreetly, I’m walking on the steps: the school performance is about to begin. The young men run to their seats, full of life and joy. The retreat has the taste of liberation, but this feeling of freedom speaks Spanish or French. This morning, the Basque language will be heard only on stage. Young people have no guilt, it seems to me that to impose responsibility on them is to lie ("if they exert a force..."). The question is: what has been offered to our youth so far if it is not a crude "silent"? When will the essential culture be given to young people, with deep and broad content and in Basque? When is that? Freedom of opinion has become a farce in this context because information and debate on facts are prohibited. Yes, the gap between prohibition and incapacity is very narrow.

We've acculturated for the sake of leisure. We have been blinded by the productions offered by the leisure industry, as all other consumer objects have done. They serve us to pass the time, a time without meaning or culture. We have become ghosts in an infinite race against time. And to support our acculturation, we cover our void with alcohol and food. We're like the alcoholic Indians in American movies. All our rituals have become meeting points to drink to the fullest. Taking advantage of the situation, mass media producers bleed out the entire field of culture in order to find the right material that can be sold. Be it Ihauteri, theatre, film, dance, song, San Juan or New Year’s Eve. But because our culture can’t be sold as it is, it is modified and streamlined to make it easier to consume. Eat, drink and sell, a wonderful image of the tourism industry. That's the bet.

To believe that such a society will become "more educated" only with the work of education is to believe in fraud. The society of consumption, because it implies the ruin of everything that touches it, whether in culture, ecology or education. Consumerism freezes our community.

Today, as the challenges of the population become more and more complicated, it is very difficult for us to fully grasp with a blink of an eye what the responsibility and role of the individual or the community might be; and it is even more difficult for us to grasp all the relationships between them. At the forefront of everything, we are powerless and powerless because culture and art are forbidden (by law or by means) to us.

High, with the imagination of art, we can manage complex concepts with fine resolutions. Since the Basque Country is a Basque, the most effective and powerful way to root, spread and develop thoughts is our culture. Basque culture is the body that speaks to the Basque community. Not only does it soften our ears or make our eyes shine; speaking to the spirit, it acts on the soul and shakes the heart. It organizes our thoughts, dreams and ghosts in a special way so that the core of our community can be put into motion. It feeds the capacity of aggression that is indispensable to any society.

It is the habit of courage, the capacity for aggression, the habit of desire and legitimacy. Not as a threat but as a proclamation, as a civilizational empowerment. This desire, this restlessness, is hyperactive, the mark of concern for what one owes to oneself. This revenge has become an initiatic journey in the search for a free people. Although we often forget it, that’s where we come from: the desire for liberation. But now, where (and how) do we want to go as a people, as a community and as an individual?
