Barrengaizto
Beatrice Salvioni (Translation:
deceit Fernando Rey)
Txalaparta, 2024
------------------------------------------------
Fernando Rey has chosen the title of Barrizto to translate La malnata de Beatrice Salvioni. King says he has tried to be the voice of the writer, as a bridge. In 2023, along with the original, it was translated into 30 other languages and we had the opportunity to read in Basque in 2024.
This novel shows the friendship of Francesca and Maddalena, located in fascist Italy, in a town of Milan crossed in 1935 by the River Lambro. One is "well educated", civilized, Christian and tries to fulfill the role of woman. The other is a miserable one. "For the Devil", wild, miserable and living in freedom.
The same happens in the film Amama, in which the role is assigned to each child at birth in each family. In this case, it has been the people who have thoroughly named it, the community has decided to reject it and reject it. It's like when Brigitte Vasallo talks about "village madman," a role he'll have to play throughout his life.
Francesca, for her part, will enter into adolescence and will be able to break with Maddalena the limits of "the good girl" that they have imposed to date. He is 12 years old and will start building his own personality thanks to those who will leave home and learn in the street, together with his friend.
It compares to L'amica geniale (Great Friend) by Elena Ferrante, but has S. R. Also from The Outsiders of Hinton (The Rebels, translated into Basque by the Begi publishing house): When leaving childhood, friends are the main refuge and next to them face the violence and misery of life.
The protagonist will learn that until then he has lived in fear, and that he can "oppose", but above all, he will realize the strength of the words. In fact, the words used are "powerful and dangerous" and "cannot be said without taking into account what they say", he added. Therefore, he will look at the phrases that fascism makes them replicate or reflect on a few words: “Love was the reason why film actresses grabbed the curtains. Sheer play. Appearance, falsehood.”
Francesca, conscious and independent, will realize the dangers of becoming a young woman in patriarchy and will get the means to respond to them, shouting, "I want you to call me by my name."
