Mariana Travacio
Erein, 2024
---------------------------------------------------
Although the title may seem like a self-help book, this is a Western text that Erein has published in the narrative section. In the excellent translation of Fernando Rey, we can read the work of Mariana Travacio for the first time in Basque.
Where we lived, it always touched the north. This is how this text begins, which will take us hand in hand with curiosity and fascination. The novel tells us about the consequences of acting with hatred and vengeance, but narrated through a way of life within the logic of hatred and revenge. That is, without pretending to impose any morality. Men are the protagonists, but she tells us the contributions of women to this world in a subtle but forceful way.
The voice of the narrator has been used excellently by the author. Although it starts with the first plural person (we), it has often jumped to the first singular person and has given us the voice of Manoel. It also shows internal conflicts (guilt, craving, impatience, doubt, etc.) of those who act this way with hatred and vengeance.
He also uses a third person to count some issues related to the Lopretet in a register closer to orality. The story awakens in the reader the same curiosity that those who listen to it will feel.
If you look at the structure, you'll find that the 139 pages that the book has are divided into 62 short chapters. And that some chapters will only cover half a page, leaving a lot of whiteness throughout the reading (which can be the sign of everything we will not know). From the point of view of style, the reports of some hard actions are mixed, but few, with descriptive sections. These parts are rested, beautiful, showing the grandeur of the landscape, and are able to penetrate into our noses the dust generated by the trot of the horses (since we saw them lifting dust on the horizon). Deep and persuasive are descriptions that will activate all the senses.
It creates an effect that I thought was special because of its structure and style: it reads fast, it is light and very intense. But at the same time, we have a sense that the interior time of the book is slow and slow. The hatred gradually recovers the inside of the characters. And even if they don't forget what happened, I've had to re-read the book's beginning to remember what caused the whole scandal. It reminds us of the human condition: a self-destructive species that behaves with hatred and the need for love.
