"Who doesn't have it knows how good it is to have it" (Mikel Laboa, The Dust of the Stars). At the time when I grew up and in the village, in general, my parents and teachers had a pretty concrete idea of the life itineraries that children and young people had to have. We lived with illusion that I could follow a straight line to have a good life. In order to have a good life, at that time it didn't take much, expectations were very simple. The time horizon for parents and teachers today is not so transparent, what children and young people need to succeed is more, the illusion of stability has faded and children and young people must live and grow in a demanding, complex and changing world.
Here are some of the reasons for governments’ commitment to driving the STEAM methodology in education systems. The integration of knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics into educational systems through active methodologies aims, in some way, to turn educational space into a laboratory of reality. This acronym was first heard in 2012 by artist Paola Guimerans at the Summer of Labs meeting in Bilbao, which at the time was in projects and studies on education and technology in the United States. Since then, the world has changed a lot and the STEAM methodology has gained strength, but where does it take us? I think we're still in a stage of exploration, and we're not very clear where it's going to lead, what transformations it's going to bring to the education system, and what benefits it's going to bring to the future of children and young people. The STEAM methodology is going to require new materialities: spaces, knowledge, tools, capabilities, relationships -- once we have them, how and why will we use the STEAM methodology? To transform children and young people into pieces that adapt to this changing and complex world? Or offer children and young people resources to shape the world?
