Members of the James Cook University and the Research Council of Australia have discovered ceramic fragments from 2,000-3,000 years ago on the island of Jiigurru in northwestern Australia. These are the oldest ceramic remains discovered so far in Australia. The geological study of the remains indicates that these ceramic pieces were manufactured on the island itself.

According to the study, Northern Queensland Aborigines were confiscated from New Guinea ' s pottery communities and from them they learned the technique of ceramic manufacturing.

This finding breaks with the theory that has so far been accepted by the prejudice that the colonizing ceramics led to Australia.
