Cherries time for digital sovereignty
BeƱat Irasuegi Ibarra @birasuegi 2024ko otsailaren 28a

I've been angry with the digital reality that surrounds me in my day to day. The personal abuse of mobiles, Google and the digital deterministic use of children's education, the voluntary submission of public institutions to the tools of big digital corporations, and in general the capitalist monoculture seen in the numerical landscape gives me uncertain irritation.

All kinds of social, cultural and political actors ask me for the data through Google tools, or they proudly tell me that they've opened the account in the latest tool of a digital corporation to get in touch with me, filling the social landscape with their logos. My strategic patience is over.

In the cooperative areas in which I am immersed, the situation is no better, and although many of us have embarked on a different path, we have a project that depends on digital corporations. The fact that the social economy is transformative, ecologist, feminist and anti-racist is becoming a completely internalized path, but it's not the same with digital. How do you free yourself from the dependency of digital capitalism?

We must claim that the digital territory is material and political and a standardized criticism of the use of the tools of digital corporations

First, to claim that digital territory is material and political and to normalize criticism of the use of the tools of digital corporations. In fact, collective and transformative projects tend to attribute to external factors the responsibility of not having a conscious and critical digitalization model, making lack of knowledge and/or technical and non-political reasons an excuse.

Secondly, in the areas of food, energy, surveillance and others, following the path of movements and projects in favour of sovereignty, we must turn technological sovereignty into an indispensable space for the emancipation of our lives and territories. We must integrate and activate discourses, political strategies and the transformative production of projects in this regard.

Thirdly, in a prosperous digital environment in the Basque Country, we must give and strengthen the agency in the decision-making areas of sovereignty to the projects being carried out, so that the departure of corporate dependence in our day to day is a practice accessible to all.

I hope that the time of cherries for digital sovereignty will be translated into collective work, leaving me irritations and I put on a daily basis my bit of sand in transformative projects like EH Digitala, the Basque fediverse, the Wikipedia in Euskera, the TEKS association and Torrekua.
