During the months of October and November, exhibitions, conferences, visits and workshops on architecture have been held within the International Architecture Biennial of the Basque Country. To what extent has the program reached the non-architect public? I'd like to know how many of those who are reading this can respond to the Architecture Biennial and how many have been at some event I can count on. The 2023 is the 4th edition and architecture has started with the intention of going out to the street. It is possible that on the walk of San Sebastian or Bilbao there were buildings of striking pavilions that have literally taken many of the programming activities to the streets. If it is not possible to inform previously, betting on the option of prior encounter.
The motto of this edition of the Biennial is to rebuild, resurrect, reinvent. The BER-/BIR suffix wants to underline the present of architecture: to do again, to go back and make a move forward. The objective of a Biennial is a space for reflection on “where we are”, an opportunity to contrast the present with the “advanced” looks offered by the historical era. And the task is varied and prosperous: it is necessary to rethink how the space can respond to the aging society, replace the neglect of concrete by the construction of wood and recycled materials, relocate the forms of creation and recovery of the referent women, the city must address questions of shadow/soda, of energy saving and where it will be produced, as well as of updating the role of the rural nucleus and of the baserritarra architecture. Surely before we begin to rebuild, we will have to undo many rigid intelligences: that architecture itself will not be able to move a transformation and that it will necessarily have to work with other fields of knowledge and with people.
