… and travel the world. Holidays are often for me a space without a screen and to enjoy new experiences. This year I travelled abroad in search of new experiences and had to abandon the idea of vacation without my screen. The reason, the comfort of digitalization and a complicated journey abroad, where I had to contact many suppliers. Traveling with a small backpack, the mobile phone has been my only tool and I have used it to make translations, know the value of foreign money, control expenses, rent the car and the room, take flights, buy tickets… I understand that all relationships between suppliers and customers can be digitalized even in the most marginal place in the world, even the small, tourism-based company can have an important part of its business model developed thanks to digitalisation.
All of this is all very well, and it makes life easier for us in the face of economic transactions, but I realize that in some places where I have gone I have had little relationship with the people there, and I think that to perceive the nature and culture of a place it is not enough to consume the native, but rather it is best to get in touch with those who live in it. Tourism has the character of moving the consumption capacity of people from one place to another, linked to the idea of experience. Unfortunately, we humans are looking for this experience massively and digitisation takes this opportunity more comfortably and effectively. Thus, the holiday period, rather than having experiences, often becomes a period of consumption. Here too we have to seek balance, sometimes we will be travellers and sometimes tourists, without being aware of the role we often play.
