Where are the young people?
In mid-December, Dax. Dozens of militants have met the trial for detainees on the day of mobilisation on 23 July. The wind has dragged the rainy clouds in the morning and the sun has begun to warm up the shore. Among the attendees, an olfactory ritual is set in motion: he dismisses an old fellow travelling, takes the news... and regrets again that he approaches a few young people. “It’s Thursday afternoon, are some working? !”.
In early January in Baiona. At a friend's birthday party, he talks to a 70-year-old godmother, the cigarette in one hand and the glass in the other. Speaking of the environment of the other and other circumstances, in a nostalgic spin, without any ties, it begins in a nostalgic spin on its golden age, which before knew what it was to fight… and the individualism of the young people of today! “I go to the accommodation to fill the forest. Do you need something?” (I never returned to him).
In mid-February, Itsasun. On the occasion of the 60th birthday of the Abertzale movement, the Bagira movement welcomes the beginning of the historical transmission. On stage, interesting witnesses from different generations and lots of people in class -- but in the frogs of many, again, young. Well, it's been organized for them. “For them, but with them?”
From the popular movement, we are charging a lot on the backs of young people. Not everything is beautiful. But we're not going to get ahead with guilt and obsessive criticism and nostalgia.
These scenes lived in recent weeks are not isolated cases. And I could share many other examples of this kind. I know that in a winter environment it is not always easy to leave the house dressed in optimism glasses. I am also aware that the dreams of a generation that intended to liberate Euskal Herria and change the world have not been fulfilled (totally) and this can lead to frustrations. Intergenerational relationships and understanding are not always easy. All right!
But I think, though, that lately from the popular movement we're carrying a lot on the back of young people. Society, forms of commitment and the political context have changed. But young people are always there. With the liberations they recover the seats of the people. Go up on the table in front of the audience for Bertsuxurlatz. They organize shows inside to empower sexual identities outside the heteronorma. They renew the tradition of the shells revolutionizing the male monopoly. They give life to the gaztetxeak, to the patron feasts, to the local associations -- and many other things that happen outside the radars of those over 30 years old, with illusion, courage and their codes.
Not everything is beautiful. But with guilt, obsessive criticism and nostalgia, we're not going to get ahead. So let us leave the young at peace… or let each generation make its aggiornament.
