November has left us imbued with conferences and days. In the themes of city and architecture, they have shown their concern about the consumption of energy and material resources of all kinds, as a tuning of the months we live, present in all the gaps. In the audience's view, sometimes it seems that there is a basis for the transformation that moves and sometimes not, which are simply words of equity or a capital trick to impoverish some more in favor of the pocket of a few.
Someone raises their hand in the room and asks, is it possible that a building is sustainable? Surprisingly, we have little information to say anything, and in any case the answer would be full of explanations and nuances. To date, two lines of work have been established: the improvement of woodworking technology and renewable energies and the incorporation of passive bioclimatic design techniques in buildings. It seems that the next step of the construction research will be to carry out the “traceability” of the building materials, that is, quantify the CO2 emission and the ecological footprint produced by the production, transport and construction of each material, and determine the impact it has on our health in the inhalation, contact and presence of a material. And most importantly, communicate the information collected. As health effects appear in the cigarette pack, making the chain of effects of a synthetic material visible is essential for an assessment.
To get a closed recipe from the sustainable building, sometimes we've come to abrupt simplifications, like saying building with wood is sustainable. Like saying that avocado is a sustainable food. We have to look at how, where, etc. But if you need a certain answer, here's one: building on the sea cliff will never be sustainable -- not building is the most sustainable answer -- and with the map of the material and the knowledge of the building materials of a place we can get a possible path.
