The urbanism carried out throughout the twentieth century, the thought and construction of the city, has transformed the relationship between the human being and the natural environment. The medieval city was physically fortified in the protection of other human beings but in the symbiosis with nature; in the contemporary city we have founded a concrete mental wall between the city and the surrounding forests, dismantling possible connections. Man is urban, punished by the city.
The culture of concrete, together with a distributed and hierarchical reading of the territory, has educated us in an urban landscape. We have become accustomed to walking the streets without the presence of the plants, it is normal that they inherit in the gardeners exile from their natural place of residence. We've been used to drowning tree trunks in the cork streets. It is natural to see large surfaces without vegetation, naturalizing the feeling of desertification. We've created a clean, leafless urbanization image. In contrast, it is important how vegetation occupies its place in man-abandoned urbanizations.
On October 3, Architecture Day is celebrated worldwide and architectural activities have been organized in many places. I'm sure that at the architecture festival, in front of the concrete culture, the culture of the forest will appear by some slice. In the community of architects, as in teaching, philosophy and psychology, the proximity of the presence of trees, forests or plants is being claimed, defending the benefits of the same presence, creating green cracks in the image of street cleaning. In school courtyards or in street urbanizations, there are signs of another sensitivity to vegetation to plant a tree or seed when concrete excavations are carried out. These actions should be seen as an exercise of inclusion, as a constructive activity to give space to the living beings expelled by the city.
