New definition of the museum
- The International Council of Museums ICOM approves the new definition of the museum 26. In the General Assembly, after 18 months of debate.
“A museum is a permanent non-profit institution serving the society that investigates, collects, conserves, interprets and displays material and immaterial heritage. Open, accessible and inclusive, museums promote diversity and sustainability. They work and communicate in an ethical, professional way and with the participation of communities, offering diverse experiences of education, enjoyment, reflection and exchange of knowledge”.
It collects accessibility and/or sustainability for the first time, but excludes other concepts discussed such as decolonization or the return of heritage to its origin.
