Stefan Zweig picked up in his book Sternstunden der Menschheit the moments that marked a direction over decades and centuries: the conquest of Constantinople, by the hand of the Turks, in 1453, and the decline of the eastern empire; the birth of the Mesias of Handel, in 1741; the failure of Napoleon, in 1815; the pardon of Russia However, he was aware that these milestones were limited: “Here, as in all areas of art and life, the culminating, unforgettable moments are very rare.” Despite the title of Zweig's book, the high moments that we have gathered in these columns have been much more humble, and perhaps because of that, if I may be allowed the adjective, they are higher: the walk, siesta, wine, the visit to cemeteries, beauty, inscriptions; Mitteleuropa, the Mediterranean, of course, France; and those works that have appeared almost as characters, Magnern, They have all served to follow, in this way, that of Montaigne: that although we speak of oneself, we have written it with the will to be talking about all men and women.
From Zweig’s book, I want especially the part of Cicero – most of the others, over time, have become, how to say, too high. And how he decides that his time has passed and that it is time for him to retire – even if he returns in the future. Three courses and 139 columns later, I too, of course, simpler, will make Cicero and I will get off this train running to leave it in the best hands.
