We have said here that we like memories, collections of memories, biographies, autobiographies, newspapers. Newspapers, intimate, personal, that writers explain their little things, very important to writers and that sometimes, and only sometimes, may interest the reader. Within the newspapers we would locate L’atelier noir, the last of Annie Ernaux, but the writing journal would be more than an intimate newspaper, that is, the doubt of writing books, a search for rumors, “all that work of the mole that crosses the endless galleries, which announces the writing of my books”. A previous newspaper “authentic writing”, that is, that abandons the “true” as soon as it begins to write: “I can’t escape this exploration phase, I need to discover my desire to write about what.” Far from being an innocence, this phase of search is decisive when it comes to the final form of the book, which is the most important one for Ernaux, which in a way Flaubert said that each work bears its own form, which must be sought, “bringing the reality of my predecessors and the vision of the world to a literary form that does not betray them.”
We will not find here the greatness we recognize in literature, but the nudity of writing processes, the obsessions of the writer, sometimes repetitive, sometimes cryptic, from which interesting things can also be extracted. But what comes to look for some writing secret will get frustrated because it is not the guide to the steps to follow to become a new Ernaux. But if this paper shows something, as in all other tasks, is that work and work are the only secret – “Scared by the number of notes I have accumulated for a project for twelve years, the project remains the same as in 82.” And yet, satisfaction with the outcome, if any, is not ensured by the work.
