Susan Sontag is actually very interested not only in his writings on fascism. It is also topical, since its main concern was the relationship between language and reality, a language that in turn can be consolable and destructive. The imaginary, for example, as present these days, as they happen to us, as regular home entertainment, with the battles and massacres we consume. In fact, Sontag asked a new definition of how we look at images of suffering, what we should do with them. When he was twelve, he saw the Holocaust in a bookstore. I would give my whole life, in this way, book by book, asking how you can picture that pain, how you can take it.
Because what an image says about the object it wants to show; if the image leans the truth, it offers a false intimacy: “There is an implicit attack behind all uses of the camera.” Photographs allow us to capture the reality, even the reality of the suffering of others, as a consumer heritage. Taking photos has established a voyeur relationship with the world that equates the meaning of all events. And the same photograph, according to who and who, will mean one thing or another, even the opposite; when we talk about the gaze on the pain of others, we cannot say “we”.
Kurioski, Sontag himself became the prisoner of his image, the last literary star in the United States, as defined by biographer Benjamin Moser. But sadness, every time I saw getting close to despondency, it was a push to hide behind the pages of a book, to go to the movies, to the opera. That always defended the sustainability of culture as a source of hope in a world of indifference and cruelty. Because one of the goals of culture is to make others, who are different from us, actually exist.
