The Willendorf venusa came from Italy
  • The famous 30,000 year old figurine is made of stone called an oolite. It was discovered in the village of Willendorf, in the Austrian valley of Wachau, and there is no such oolite in these places.

Researchers at the University of Vienna have used computerized microtomography to study the material of the venusa and have concluded that stone is likely to originate in northern Italy, near Lake Garda.

They don't know whether they surrounded the Alps or whether they were able to cross the Sierra at that time, but experts think it's possible that several generations may be needed to travel around 700 kilometers.
