At first it was just a language. According to Agota Kristof, in his book of writers Ilfabetoa. Objects, things, feelings, colors, dreams, letters, books, newspapers were in that language, in Hungarian. The fact is that, at twenty-one years old, he comes to Switzerland, to a city in which he speaks French, and he has to face an utterly strange language. “That’s when I start my struggle to master that language, a long and passionate struggle that I’ll hold for my entire life. I’ve been speaking French for 30 years, I’ve been writing in French for 20 years, but I still don’t dominate well.” That is why I said that the French language is also an enemy language. But there's another reason, and it's also the most serious one. “this language is killing my mother tongue.”
The truth is that, at twenty-five years old, I came to a place where I was not mine, and I had to face a language that was not entirely alien, but that I knew very well with the help of another. A better starting point than Kristof. Over time, moreover, those languages that I know more or less have not been recognized, but have been locating their place, the one that drives them. And if the language of the house, Spanish and French, has become Catalan, my literary language has become Basque. I read – excellent literature translated into Basque – but above all I write – although, in view of the panorama, I feel like starting in another language. It is paradoxical that a language that has hardly had literature becomes a literary language. Outside the home, therefore, almost outside the culture, for me the Basque language has been limited to being a literary language. It seems that it's little, but for those who live in literature, to believe, it's much more than it seems.
