After 20 years, Anne Igartiburu returns to EiTB to present a program that works on architecture. I have ingested the three programmes issued taking curiosities. It has been difficult for me not to compare Spanish public television with the broadcast of the Human Scale for the promotion of architecture. EiTB sometimes makes a “Basque copy” of several programs in Spanish, but this is not the case. The differences between the two programs do not know what they relate to, how to understand architecture or television (Basque) with Basque culture in general (and not in the Basque Country).
EiTB has tried architecture to make entertainment and show, while in the Spanish-language program there is a desire for the culture of architecture to reach citizenship. In the first, a vip presenter has been signed, but to fulfill a secondary function, and known characters are invited, in the second, the architects are the main speakers. The first speaks of the buildings of the Basque Country and not of the Basque Country; the second, of the architectural concepts nicos.El Mourning on the heights of our television is a high-tech display: they use drone views and 3D scanners to show the buildings “as you have never seen”. And this aspect of modernity is combined with a more popular hook: a competition is proposed between the buildings that are displayed, requesting the vote of the spectators. The show presents buildings as if we were in the middle of a battle, helped by music, and adds epicity to architecture. Architecture is, therefore, a scenario, an anecdote, a place of myths and Basque expressions, which searches common places that can stimulate the interest of all citizens.
It seems that we are still stuck in an old debate: the public service has to communicate messages that are easy to understand, simplifying the message, otherwise it becomes elitist.
