Today's young people confuse the mythic with the typical. Especially in Spanish, but also when they are in Basque. They use the “mythical” to describe a typical situation: “When you go with someone mythical in the elevator, the two are silent...” In fact, the mythic is memorable and typical, but its use is free and its language is alive.
Concerts, events or phrases are mythical. It is a mythical phrase, for example, “A language is not lost…”. It's confusing to say next, but we have internalized the game of words and meaning. It has hung on many doors, black and white, disregarding the commitment to the language of the Basques, until it has become typical.
The vasophiles at the birth of the phrase had done a tremendous job. They took the Basque country covertly to all walks of life and created a lot of tools. It was clear that the concern for the situation of the Basque Country was not only that of the speaker, but that the institutions and those responsible should put in place measures and resources: General model D, language plans, subsidies, linguistic landscape, usage quotas...The guarantee of rights was the priority.
"Mythical phrases collect the essence of a vision or idea and guide the focus. Lately I agree that we should put the spotlight on young people in Artzenea"
In Ordizia another mythical phrase from Lazkao Txiki has been taken to a giant mural: “In this march we will talk about Spanish because we think we are speaking in Basque.” It is not a phrase as widespread as that of Artze; few Basques knew it until recently, “the most central”. In the middle, a little bertsolari, colorful, smiling, asking us to look after our language.
It is common to create fears and resistance to what is changing, as the phrase shows. Also in the 1991 interview in this same magazine, the small bertsolari launched “The Basque, is real, is old”, and instead of saying “soon yes, we will say ‘yes’ and we will find it more appropriate”. The same confusion... By the year 500, he criticized the language of young people.
Mythical phrases collect the essence of a vision or idea and guide the focus. Lately I agree that we should put the spotlight on young people in Artzenea again. In fact, most of the young people around them are Euskaldunes (more than 80%), in most organizations there are plans, but there is a lack of demand. They have the greatest possibility of living in Euskera and of identifying and denouncing difficulties and violations of rights.
But to do so, they must live and create their concerts, mythical facts and phrases, make typical proactive uses and attitudes and reject topics, topics, topicings.
