Napoleon was, of course, on the battlefield of Bonarparta, but the battle did not occur in the lands of Waterloo, but only a few kilometres from there. The battle took place in the village of Mont-Saint-Jean, between the municipalities of Braine-l’Alleud and Plancenoit.
That is why, at first, the French called the defeat of Napoleon the battle of Mont-Saint-Jean. But the winner, the Duke of Wellington, did the war report in Waterloo, and eventually the fame was for that town.
