Anthony Browne is an international leader in children's albums. Some of his works are translated into Basque for the poet of our readers. There they are in the Forest, in the Osteratxo Park, for example, the Inquietamuxelas or a Gorilla. On this occasion, and thanks to the translation of Manu López, Ernesto is an elephant, published internationally along with other languages.
The author, as usual, plays with text and illustration to convey the message he wants to convey. In this way, along with words, it drives us to “read” the image.
“Ernesto lived with his grandmother and the others in the group. Every day they walked, ate and drink. At night they slept.” This phrase is the beginning of the book, but next to the phrase we can see the figure of a group of elephants, an older elephant in a kind of desert at the beginning and in the end a small row. This little one will be the only one looking at the reader in the next picture. The book tells the story of this little elephant who, driven by curiosity, wanted to meet and get lost in the jungle. He asks for help, and nobody hears him until a small mouse asks him, "Do you need help?" Ernesto initially rejects him, but thanks to this little mouse he will finally be able to return with his mother.
Anthony Browne's books perfectly reflect the message you want to convey by conjugating the tones of the text with those of the image, but also the author often plays with the images. And in this case, the jungle is the author's playground. The space outside the forest is dry, of little color, while the jungle is a space full of color, and in that vitality of color there are countless objects of color other than natural (ball, candy, giant strawberries, hanging clothes…), creating the smile of the reader in this wonderful book.
As the reader can see, the argument in this book resembles the known fables. How a small mouse solves the problem to the young elephant after asking for help from the gorilla, the lion, the hippopotamus or the crocodile and receiving their negative or non-response. That is, the small and the weak can also help the bigger and stronger than him.
Leaving behind books, libraries and their benefits in April, Kabiak Sahrawi wishes to recall the dark side of his history, which is of greater importance in defending the identity and survival of peoples. We are talking about the destruction of the age-old and usual libraries... [+]
