Neither the ovituary, nor the column of Cahiers du cinema, but let me comment on another reading by a filmmaker, very brief, seemingly simple, sure imperfect, which seems not to count many things, but his simple imperfect short in what does not count many things, at least to me has made an absolutely exciting reading. I refer to the novel Une famille à Bruxelles de Chantal Akerman, or to the story, or to the simple story.
The protagonist is a woman who has just lost her husband, her two daughters, her own husband, a somewhat broader family on occasions – parents, siblings, sister-in-law, etc. She lives in an irresistible neighborhood in Brussels, “but we have always had the bathroom,” away from her daughters, her husband is already in the other neighborhood. And these losses are precisely the narration of the family, the family, the family, the group of people who formed, who have, who are going to continue to form. The portrait is nothing cruel, it does not seem to have a very dramatic existence, it has nothing to do with the other world, but it is precisely the everyday life of this woman, of that family, that provokes concern, which is ultimately that of all of us.
They say that what characterizes Akerman's cinema is not what happens on the street, or the trade, the factory, in the classroom, but rather it is capturing what happens in the living room, in the room, in the bathroom, especially in the kitchen. Therefore, it counts intimacy, but not in an exercise of exhibitionism, with the intention of expanding the limits of what can be counted. In this case, it refers to the intimacy of the family, one of the most sophisticated methods of organization, rationalization and domination of society. Of course, when we talk about family, I personally would like to retain that of Antonio Lobo Antunes, which, despite the blood ties, is the family you have chosen and the family you have chosen.
