If there were a category of writers and mountaineers, the paradigm would be Erri De Luca – among the Basques there would be many candidates, Borda, Epaltza, Sarasola; but what Basque is not mountaineer, for a moment, if it is nothing else in intimacy? Who knows if by that mountaineering, but De Luca is known to be one of the Basque readers. It seems to me that a writer is overrated; or I have had bad luck with those I read him. For example, the last one, Impossibile, which is the mountain literature, “everyone has their reasons to go to the mountain; it is mine to turn his back on everything”, but also that of the prison, the subgenre that so close to us goes to the Basques – think, from the beginning, from the moment that Etxepare himself entered that place of Bearn –. The protagonist is accused of killing a member of past revolutionary times and most of the novel is the interrogation by a judge, although from a moment on it seems more Socratic dialogue. Here is the third element to like the Basque reader De Luca, the political touch, not only of his work, but also of De Luca himself, revolutionary in the Italy of the 70's. It is still awkward, because it was not long ago acquitted to say in Lyon-Turi that the high-speed line had to be sabotaged.
De Luca’s literature does not convince her, but we must thank her for one thing, which does not impose any ideas, which does not teach the reader, which does not propaganda with the excuse of literature – these are three things, but good –. He said in a presentation interview of his latest novel that “the novel that seeks to demonstrate an author’s thesis is inevitably poor. The literature describes life, it is in the hands of the reader the difference”. Because it's not literature, it's not music, cinema and all the other languages that are best suited to showing theses and clear messages. What happens is that this purpose does not always ensure good literature.
