San Silvestre and San Garmin
Momo (Michael Ende, 1973) looked at the men who lived hastily from one side to the other. I have also looked with astonishment, as she did, at the rival runners who stopped the stopwatch described by Karmele Jaio in the Runner article, after crossing the finish line at full speed. Their faces were filled with great satisfaction; but it was nothing more than that of the group of boys and girls, held by the hands of the last.
As I reflected on the existence of a popular character typical of San Silvestre and similar races, I thought that the concept of popular should be focused on changing its meaning. It was clear that athletes everywhere had very different goals that day, such as winning, demonstrating, breaking a brand, training, doing sports among friends, sweating, sharing, etc. There is no doubt that all these objectives are respectable, but it is doubtful that some are compatible with the concept of popular races: on the one hand, if one of the goals of the race is to dismiss the year that ends in an atmosphere of friendship, and if you want to encourage the participation of every year more citizens, the picture described can generate just the opposite effect. And on the other hand, the fact that the signs of an increasingly competitive society are in this test, leads us to reconstruct the popular past with terms like speed, haste, brand, time and superiority.
A friend of mine talks about the importance of encouraging slow mountain or relaxed mountaineering, to have a peaceful chat and enjoy the landscape. Why not apply this idea to different sports tests to promote the popular environment and relations between citizens? Competition is and will be part of sport, but as we insist on children, we should also recognise that at the different moments of life and sports areas competition has different meanings and must not be a priority at all times.
So we have to decide whether the way we do the popular races will define us or the meaning that the popular races that we want to define have to have. If I did nothing, I am sure that the gray men of Momo will take us in their redes.El
