Immigration and rumors: number yes, but...
Many people think that statistical data are the only effective and effective tool for dealing with rumours and stereotypes about immigration. It is clear that the reality of this phenomenon must be clearly and precisely known, but we must put on the table the limitations and weaknesses of the numbers.
In the field of immigration, it is frequent to see that reality and perception do not coincide. For example, year after year, the perception of immigration is higher than that of reality and if today this figure is 10%, the perception is 17%. However, in 2007, when the number of immigrants was 5.7%, the perception was 17.9%, higher than today when the number of immigrants was half that today. In this sense, it should be clear that, in addition to the statistical reality, the treatment of the media or political discourses influence the construction of these perceptions.
The problem is not just that the information being collected is correct or wrong, if so, with rigorous statistical data it would be enough to fight rumours and prejudices. In the elaboration of prejudices there is a rational element – the information we receive – but also the emotional dimension. That the head and the heart depend on prejudices.
So, if we want to oppose prejudice, we have to work both sides, rational and emotional; with the former it will not be enough. First, in this field of emotion, it is important to use a certain empathy in the approach. For example, we will achieve little or nothing if we call people racists before we know them. Secondly, it may be worth relegating virtuous and perfect discourses and praising the normality of the phenomenon of immigration through the experiences that occur in reality. Through this tool, cold data and remote examples, with special emphasis on proximity and day-to-day. Likewise, the spaces are important, the conferences can be interesting, but it can also be a very effective strategy the search for suitable spaces in leisure or at parties.
In short, data, yes, emotion, too. We need to give rigorous information to deal with rumours about immigration, but we also need to work stories that come to the heart and the bowels, if we want to combat the prejudices that threaten coexistence.
