General strike: convergence of struggles
The year 2019 has also not been enough in Euskal Herria either. The social dynamics within Basque society, driven by international events and domestic conflicts, has advanced in the recovery of its political space.
This year's record of the social partners is spectacular. We all remember the mobilisations of pensioners, the mobilisations of the feminist movement, the hard struggles and strikes of the workers, the climate initiatives, the spectacular protests of the youth movement, the permanent dynamic in favour of political prisoners, the internationalist solidarity or the undeniable success of various dynamics in favour of the Basque country. And along with that, there are also hundreds of small initiatives targeting destructive projects at the local level. The work and struggle of thousands and thousands of citizens in 2019 is prosperous.
But social dynamics and criticism, although giant, is not central to political forces with other priorities: elections, institutional power and subordinate management.
Therefore, the main problem of general demobilization is not apathy, lack of enthusiasm or fear of Basque society, but the lack of courage and credibility of the political class, when they are not against it.
Even if the political class does not want to accept it, Basque society is alive and knows how to get it right when it deems it necessary. Aware of the strength and spirit of the social movement, the Basque social and trade union actors gathered in the Social Charter have said that there are conditions for moving forward and have decided to convene a General Strike by the end of January. It was time! Because we have thousands of small and big reasons to do so.
The Biarritz G7 Summit, which was concluded a few months ago, showed us the agents participating in the G7 EZ National Platform that it is not possible today to carry out the cooperation of all anti-capitalist parties because other national interests are interwoven. But yes, in the local context, it is possible to channel the convergence and unity of action of all anti-capitalist agents. And that's what we have to do. That is what the Popular Social Rights Platform (PPA) is about at the local level for social, civil and political rights that it proposes to create ELEAK-Libre.
Therefore, we must unite in a single proposal the proposal of ELEAK-Libre, the activation of the Social Charter and the intention to promote the content of the Social Charter with a committed dynamic, to promote the convergence of struggles and civil disobedience in the local context. The General Strike is coming, the time has come to bring together all the anti-capitalist and prepare us. What we have to strengthen is the People's Power.
