The ancient Romans celebrated Saturnalia in December around the winter solstice. The morning salutatio ceremony was held during Saturn’s festivities: the lords and the patrons gave the “clients” so protected (cliens) a lot of figs, laureles and other special foods, enclosed in a wicker basket.
This set of Saturnalia products was called a sportula or “cestilla”.
