Improve work, improve culture
The socio-economic situation of the place in which we live is directly related to the cultural level of the people here (Meatz. Lately I have heard some young people from the people who have to share and develop their thoughts and concerns in our closest environment. These are young people who work professionally or voluntarily in the cultural or social sphere, totally integrated in the city, but who do not find an environment where to share their ideas and thoughts.
They say that they go abroad and that in the relations with people from other regions of the Basque Country they perceive another peace of mind, a more pleasant environment to deal with the issues. We also felt that we were younger on our first out-of-town journeys.
We are the children of a region that has moved from agriculture to mining and industry, which has collapsed and become buyers of personnel in commercial areas. The public cultural centres in the region are relatively new and, among other things, our people still do not have a room for cultural activities. Thus, the cultural programming here has always been weak and, as is normal, people have not had the habit of attending theatre, dance, literature or music shows. Therefore, in this situation, whatever the record of the cultural activity that takes place in one language or another, it is frequent that something is organized and that very few spectators appear. So far there has been no corpus of solid cultural creators or receivers, hence the difficulty of sharing, reflecting or starting any creative work.
Undoubtedly, the community networks and facilities of the locality play an important role in the revitalization of cultural activity, but on the personal level the tranquility of the living conditions of each one directly affects the possibilities of access to culture.
How are you going to go to a cultural activity if someone is working from morning to night?
How will a person develop their ideas and concerns if they do not have time to take care of their own children or the elderly? We need facilities for the development of culture, but we need a working model that respects people’s needs. Have time to take care of the family and allow us to develop one's own person, motivation and concerns. We are many in Meatzvillage-Ezkerraldea, we come from many backgrounds and we have a lot to say. Meanwhile, television and the bar will be the basis of the culture of the region.
