The doubts of lovers of Modena
  • In 2009, two human skeletons of about 1,600 years old were found in a necropolis in Modena, Italy. There were also other human footprints, but these two were peculiar: they were buried in one grave and caught by the hand.

The elements commonly used to distinguish the gender from the deceased were severely impaired, so they could not confirm whether they were men or women. But it didn't matter, it was obvious that it was a man and a woman, and, of course, a lover. Soon the “Modena Lovers” became symbols of eternal love. Until a new method to determine gender using a dental enamel protein revealed that both were men.

All those who gave themselves for good and safe without evidence have been questioned. Were they siblings? Cousins? Dead on the battlefield? According to the researcher at the University of Bologna, Federico Luigi, “we do not rule out it completely, but it is the furthest hypothesis, because then homosexuality was a crime.” It says that the concept of society at that time must be taken into account. But we must also take into account the influence that the social conception of our time has had on the interpretation of the footprints.
