Euskalgintza innovative or revolutionary?
Thanks to the impetus of the Basque culture, both citizen and institutional, numerous initiatives and dynamics have been launched with the aim of promoting the Basque Country. The agents working in them aim to ensure a healthy future for the Basque Country.
However, we wonder whether there is a chance of achieving this goal in this type of society. In fact, it is known that this globalized world causes collateral damage to diversity, and in this destructive vortex, many cultures and languages, like many species of nature, are in danger of extinction.
There are therefore some doubts. Contrary to this dominant trend of globalization, is it possible to totally neutralize its devastating effect and, in this way, not only to get out of the vulnerable situation in which the Basque country finds itself, but also to live healthy and long? Can minority languages be saved from the threat of globalisation, without the need to revolutionize that world?
And it is that, just as language change is a social change, the effort to normalize languages in a situation of dependency can be too weak if the compensatory and destructive force of the globalisation they have against is not totally cut.
In short, the hypothesis we put on the table is as follows: “All kinds of efforts to revitalize and revitalize a language in a situation of dependency do not guarantee success, as not everyone will be able to overcome and reverse the devastating trend of globalization.”
This question is based on Social Innovation; in other words, on the two approaches that usually differ within this concept: the minimalist and the transformer. It is often said that the minimalist point of view serves to alleviate a situation of social precariousness, without always touching on the essence of that society. The transformative approach seeks to bring about profound changes in society, such as change in power relations, the push for bottom-up governance, the substitution of the values and principles that prevail in the world today, etc.
We suspect that most of the activities carried out by Basque cultural activity fall within the minimalist approach of Social Innovation. Such efforts can undoubtedly contribute to alleviating the worrying situation of the Basque Country. But is that enough to guarantee a healthy future for the Basque Country, or would it be necessary to address the revolutionary vision that calls for transformative social innovation?
