Still on time
Many of us have grown up in the small neighborhood festivities; all summer hills to hills. Ribbons filled with ikurriñas from the roof to the roof, a bar covered by a blue or red canopy, hermitage, a spinning ringer, in the program “meza-idiaun-mus and briska-bertsolarias -children’s games”. And as it takes about ten years from playing children's games to participating in the men's championship, many young people have gone from the parties of the neighborhood to the parties of some larger town in the area.
Some of these young people will return, influenced by the historical degree of commitment of their relatives or perhaps by their personal choices, and they will be the ones responsible for assembling or pintxos. Others have come back as a program, whether it's bertsolari, trikitilari, singer. It is fortunate and involves a great emotional involvement the possibility of coming back, but in general, the profile of visitors to the festivities of the neighborhoods is getting older; few of us are under 30 and we know that we are going to sing, serve or listen to people between 50 and 70 years of age. And that can be enriching, but also analyzable – and it also suggests that the holiday model is coming to an end.

With what body do we move to these kinds of places? What comes to mind with the name of “the older person of the neighborhood”? What do we tell them, what do we do with humor, what reactions do we expect from them? Doesn't it happen to us that we've always considered traditional spaces, that we don't make so much effort for something to change? In the case of Bertsolarism it is almost necessary to adapt to the environment, to search for a common land between our worlds and to connect with the public through it, but what paths do we take? What do we say about women, about men, about what sex, about what politics?
If we consider the neighbourhoods of small towns as immutable and conservative, we are condemning to death areas of great potential. Popular construction, culture, feminism, environmentalism… Neighborhoods can offer as many options as other spaces to work what we want, to reinvent and update us. They're very concerned: they can't afford the budgets of the new teams, there's no people who can cover the bar shifts, to start reinventing themselves with just forces to keep them. We should think about this, both from the local authorities and from the citizens. What would you like to hear about you at the parties of your neighborhood in the year 2055?
