Some will talk to you about free choice, forgetting that freedom is linked to the subject’s material living conditions and that all “individual” decisions are socially determined. Others draw the letter from altruism, when feminism is over two hundred years old we should be clear that love and altruism are often the result of historically imposed submission roles, which have been socialized to put the needs and desires of others before our own. There are also those who confuse desires and rights, without explaining which women should satisfy that right if a woman believes that the incubation of foreign foetuses is a right – when the birth rate is lower than ever –. Because it's not credible that women don't have children of their own and start having children of others.
And what is the reason for the current low birth rate? The lack of access to the market for children by those who cannot have children is not an urgent matter. The point is that, as soon as you have a mother, you increase the risk of poverty and that is a social problem that needs to be solved immediately, unlike the genealogical whims of a few. The protagonists of this debate are the ones that we have to put at the centre – mothers – and the policies to ensure that motherhood does not fall on the burden: decent maternity leave, cheap public childcare, no expulsions of pregnant women, social and collective responsibility for care… It would be better if we fulfilled those rights that affect half of the population, instead of inventing new supposed rights.
