The Olatu Talka of Donostia-San Sebastian seems to have done its best, after ten years. And if I tell the truth, it doesn't hurt me. Not because of the voluntary work carried out by several Donostiarras, but because it has focused exclusively on it, with the help of a few professionals. If you had to pay for the organization of such a giant assembly, you wouldn't do it. Free culture, again, free culture. With other exhibits, Olentzero, Cabalgata de Reyes, does the same thing. In Bilbao, they are left in the hands of theatre companies.
And I deliberately mentioned Bilbao. Because I felt a huge envy when a few days ago the Arriaga Theatre presented its programming for next year. Because in addition to showing the representations of private companies, their own production occupies a large space. And if you take the site, it's because it's done. With local actors and directors, from one group or another, sometimes the other. And that, in addition to giving it work, creates environment, cultural life. And create the possibility to take work forward that can't be produced privately. In Donostia-San Sebastián it cannot be because nothing is produced. And the same thing in Vitoria. In Pamplona no. The Gayarre Theatre has produced its own productions. Bilbao and Iruñea are factories and shop windows and Donostia and Gasteiz are empty windows. This is what has always been attributed to San Sebastian and does not seem to have any trace of change. Would it cost money? Of course. But also have clean beaches, pay the first responders… Are fireworks free of charge? Is San Sebastian doomed to escape? Creating culture doesn't matter to us, just showing what's created privately. Of course, you cannot show what is not created.
