Maintaining the social pulse
- The history of social agents and the labour movement, such as peoples and society as a whole, is unquestionable here and around the world: only through pressure have social and political rights been achieved. In other words, they have been achieved through strikes, concentrations, demonstrations and occupations, and in some cases even armed struggle as a backdrop. In these cases, the political and social pulse has remained in front of the capitalist, patriarchal and male chauvinist system. This wants nothing but benefits, and occasional governments accompany them.
A century ago the Compulsory Toilet for Workers aged 65 was achieved; later an eight-hour working day and maternity leave was achieved; dignified housing was acquired in the mining area of Bizkaia and purchases were made outside the canteens established by the employers; women gained the right to vote… Today, pensioners are fighting for a minimum pension worth 1,080 euros and they are automatically updated. They also call for a reduction in the year of retirement. Women, for their part, work for equality, against the wage gap. To achieve these goals, there is no other way than constant mobilization, maintenance of the social pulse.
In this context, the hypocrisy of governments, starting with that of Urkullu, is denouncing. On 8 March they settled in the Basque Parliament with chestnut beds, but it was they who refused in the budgetary negotiations to supplement pensions below the poverty line. We can extend this denunciation to other governments and other politicians who have the ability to decide to make social reforms in their hands. They don't. Consequently, the maintenance of the social pulse is still necessary.
