The purple thread of strikes
In studying economics, I've never seen the concept of strike, even though the link between them is very straightforward. The reason is obvious: economic power defines what the economy is. In the strike of women the invisibility is double, because the analysis is done with the glasses of capital and men. I take this time to recall some of those we have done here.
In 1889, in the Santutxu district of Bilbao, there were a few factories. Among them was a txakoli winery and a cigarette factory. Most of the workers were women, with precarious working conditions: wages of misery and endless working hours. Women started a strike on 8 March, in which, in addition to improving working conditions, the head of the plant rejected production because cigarettes were of poor quality. It should be noted that tobacco was of very low quality and that the mechanization generated greater pressure on the staff. The administrator was thrown out of the window and in five days the women got what they were asked for.
In 1903, a few years later, the female workers of Pamplona were protagonists of another conflict. The company Calzados López worked with very young women, many of them children. In addition to poor working conditions, the company wanted a wage reduction, with 48 of the 60 workers starting a strike in April this year.

In 1905, women went on a hire strike in Barakaldo and Sestao. The unions of this time agreed to set in motion rental strikes to deal with the rising costs of housing. The owners started evictions but in Barakaldo the women faced taking up the streets with their utensils and furniture to avoid evictions. All means of transport, including the train connecting with Bilbao, were paralysed. The conflict jumped to neighboring Sestao: 2,000 families were on strike. The Blast Furnaces of Vizcaya, the Nervión shipyards and typographers began the strike. Despite declaring the state of war, the economic life of Gran Bilbao remained in one month.
