The Swan Revolution
Nothing is expected of this show by the dancer Dada Masilo. It's not worse or better than what we wanted to see. The truth is, it's hard to explain. We were going to enjoy a classical dance – with a twist, yes – but we saw a simple and very short story (less than an hour) in which there was no gender, the argument of the classic Lake of the Cisnes was completely lost, and we heard the music of Txaikovski from time to time. All this is true. But we enjoyed a fresh and really nice and joyful show.
In South Africa, Dada Masilo is one of the most well-known choreographer dancers, daring, brilliant. He has taken the most classical of the classical ones, he has assimilated his themes, the music of Tchaikovsky, mixed with others, very mixed, the tubes and the shoes, and with all that he has done what he has put on the tip of his nose, with a great deal of respect, yes. As has been said, he has addressed the subjects of Master Tchaikovski, as well as fragments of Saint-Säens or sheet music from contemporary musicians such as Arvo Part. Wonderful cocktail.
Boy and girl with the tube on, tells the story of a homosexual love, the intolerance of society, the feeling of loneliness… but, yes, with humor and an incendiary dance. This crazy version of swan lake has been interpreted across Europe, Montreal, Ottawa and New York, getting very good criticisms. In fact, at the Lyon Biennale it was a great success, especially for offering a new and breakthrough vision of the classic.
On choreography, you can only say good things. Masilo mixes contemporary dance with virtuosity, very stylized and rhythmic, with strong African and leading influences. And as a result of this mix, a very vivid ballet comes out. I would not say that they achieve technical perfection, no, but those in Johannesburg go beyond perfection. Their goal is the passion of dance and they certainly managed to convey passion and emotion to the public. The show, which lasted forty and ten minutes, passed quickly. Fresh air!
