Hopeless illusions, fascinating despair
The third issue of the IPES Langaiak Collection (August 1983) has just appeared in my house. Title: Debate on the Basque conscience in Navarre. A sociological contribution. The content (the result of the debate at four tables throughout Navarre) in some parts seems very topical.
A retrospective déjà vu? Witch? The eternal return?
The quotation of the previous and subsequent titles of the collection increases the feeling of a continuous repetition. First issue: Two controversial centuries in the history of Navarre. From the Carlist wars to the Foral Amejoramiento Segundo: Article 87. History of women to their own. And the fourth -- which will be published later -- is sex education in school.
In Navarre a dream emerged once: a dream to change a political system that often seems eternal. That dream failed several times (the Otanus case, the August of 2007...) and resurfaced so many times.
And in 2015, it took enough strength to withstand.
He had incarnated himself, made himself flesh and created illusion, joy, hope.
We now live in Navarre in the longest attempt to change things.

An attempt of this kind, in addition to the impulse that the dream itself
has given it, needs other ingredients: deception and work, often difficult; flexibility, to direct the direction in whatever is necessary; skill, to know when and in what to surrender (and in what, and when, not); art, to avoid being disturbed the illusions that come from the hand of high dreams and low humor. And, like in adventure movies, a great power to avoid the pitfalls of all classes.
Because, once again, some problems – surprisingly united – have appeared. And once again, these problems, as on previous occasions, are neither essential nor radical. Its causes are obscure and incomprehensible, but its consequence is clear and easy to understand: to become an obstacle to continuing the path undertaken.
Dreaming gives a push to do things, but at the same time dreams always have something, or a lot, of fascination.
Soon, for the month of May, we will see how far the project that emerged from a dream has come in 2015, to what extent it has gained strength, or how much glare it has had.
In Navarre there is a risk that the illusion will become despair. However, it would be worse to be fascinated by despair, to think that it is not worth dreaming again.
