Lobby of the arms industry, of joy
- It is not true that there is a lack of money in the world, that the states and the European Union do not have money to meet the socio-occupational needs of the citizens. It all depends on the political priorities of each government.
According to data from the International Institute for Peace Research in Stockholm, in 2017 global military spending was one and a half trillion dollars. USA, $609,758 million; China $228,231 million; and Russia $66,335 million last year. The ranking, led by the French State, is based on $44,329 million, compared to the 300,000 spent by the countries that make up the European Union. The Spanish State spent $16,227 million last year in the military field, according to data provided by Europa Press.
It is clear that the arms industry lobby is happy, even more so after last week’s announcement of strengthening the European military industry with a fund of EUR 13 billion. What is known as the “European Peace Instrument” has also been launched: EUR 10.5 billion for the period 2021-2027. Name by name, this instrument is intended to finance the military attacks of other countries. In addition, Brussels will allocate EUR 6.5 billion to the ‘Connecting Europe’ mechanism to ensure the transport of military vehicles and soldiers across the Union.
Interestingly, the European ‘defence’ policy that generates military spending is one of the few that generates consensus among partner countries. The military lobby of the arms industry works very well in EU offices and in governments. Large banks and multinationals impose their own interests. Otherwise, there will be some social spending… to avoid mass revolt.
In mid-January, the Cedarras Forum presented the report Euskadi and the European Union, the shared destiny of prosperity and competitiveness. It contains recommendations for the PPAs, taking as a reference the reports submitted by Draghi and Letta for the European Union.
