How on the rollercoaster
In the following lines we will talk about the Maialen Hegi-Luku Prime Opera. Girgil has been given the title of the IX edition of the Gazteluma. Winning work of the literary creation stock. This is the seventh work awarded, created in 2000 to promote the writing in Basque of young writers from Ipar Euskal Herria.
Munia is the bipolar protagonist and its goal is to put the reader in the face of this “hospital madness”. To do so, different narrative voices will look at the issue from the outside and from the inside. The first person appears to us when the protagonist tells us his experience and with the third person the narrator shows us how his environment, his family and friends experience it.
Psychological disorders, mental illness, headache, insanity... In the Western culture of recent times it has been expanding more and more, and in the Basque literature there has also been this increase in presence. The two most notable examples so far are Ni Vera (2012), by Itxaso Martin, and The Ghost Blood (2014), by Alaine Agirre. Three studies show the testimonies of those who have experienced this experience and its influence on the environment.
Hegi-Luku has used various types of texts to narrate bipolarity through fiction: narration, interviews, diary, social media messages, letters, and in addition to writing, he has made cover drawings and five beginnings.
The images and symbols used drink from mythology when the hooks, lamia or black cat are brought to the combs, and have placed the grasslands and the street in mutual competition. The protagonist resides in Paris, but will travel by train to the Baiona parents’ cottage and return to the city to complete and restore the balance between land and sea.
As for colors, black, darkness and night propagate in moments of depression, in times of boom and delirium, a thousand colors will excite us in the neons of shopping malls and street lights. In Agirre's work, on the contrary, red, the color of the blood, of anguish prevailed.
A critical view also appears, for example, when the protagonist asks “who or what retains the motto?”, body, mind, psychiatrists, pharmaceutical laboratories? Therefore, there is the possibility of internalizing Euskera in these issues.
