In the history of the Basque novel, the War of 36 often appears through different aesthetics. However, there are few who have chosen the form of the traditional historical novel to address this ga, although in the novels of customs of 1936-1957 that speak of war one can see some hint (I remember Loretxo, Ekaitzpean or Laztantxu and Betargi). The novel Badena da de Patxi Zabaleta is one of the few works found within this subgenre.
This is the second issue of a trilogy, and with the focus on BEÑAT Mandaz, the omniscient narrator tells us the recent past of Navarre. Each character that adapts to Beñat's trajectory has his story, although there is always some kind of relationship between them, either because they are characters alone, because they have experienced similar situations, because when they were children they meet and find themselves again, etc. All of this, together with a detailed description of the stories of love, betrayal and sexual intercourse, catches the reader.
As usual in the historical novel, the focus is on the past, and some passages approach traditional historiography. Zabaleta's literature also has another peculiarity that is perceived from the title itself, as it sometimes introduces long philosophical passages in history. However, sometimes, registration makes it inappropriate and is forced to these historical and philosophical explanations, moving away from the novel to literary fiction.
However, although this novel is not entirely correct with the form, it makes some interesting contributions: it explains the vicissitudes of a group of anarchists, showing some contradictory reflections between them (all related to the management of power of the group), it is put to a woman with a medical career as leader of the anarchists (which, by the way, is not only desirable, but also has a phonetically tender and lazlox-like name, “– (…) Oxo Orator. What a soft name, what lovely name (…)”, (327), testifies to the tensions of the Francoist side (Carlists, Fascists and Falangists), etc.
The components of this book have the opportunity to attract the mass of readers, and thus, the novel can fulfill the author's explicit intention of remembering the perversities suffered by women during the war.
