I come with the book that Navarre bookstores have recently awarded the best book in Basque in 2017: Caliban and witch. In 2004 he arrived in English, in 2010 in Spanish and last year in Basque thanks to the work of Edurne Lazkano and Aitor Arruti.
It is a sexy volume (with almost 500 pages), exciting for neurons, because it allows us to think and develop a critical look at this ambitious work by Silvia Federici. The issue is witch hunt, which happened mainly in Europe, but also in America and Africa. It started in the late Middle Ages, but still today it has left traces in different parts of the world. It also makes connections between the witches of Europe, American colonization and the slaves of Africa.
The author has done an extraordinary documentary work and a valuable theoretical contribution: she has placed witch hunt on social, economic and political issues and has re-read history from a feminist perspective, taking into account gender, class and race.
The first chapter tells us the background of the medieval revolt environment. In the second chapter he talks about the creation of capitalism and shows us the mechanisms that were put in place to move from the feudal system to the capitalist system and clarify what the function of witch hunt was. The third chapter deals with the expropriation of the body and the generation of sexual policies. The fourth chapter will address the issue of witch hunt in Europe with the help of words, graphics and images. The fifth chapter, finally, will focus on the colonization and Christianization of the “New World” and on the displacements to gold, silver, discourse and representation between metropolis and colonies.
He will tell us how the new order was implemented through the extirpation of the earth, the body, the networks of relations and humanity, the spread of sorrows, propaganda and fear. Postulating that they had destroyed resistance groups that did not support power relations, especially poor old women: “By beating the woman, the class authorities subjected the entire proletariat.”
Some books, like movies, have soundtrack, which for me has History repeats itself from Reincident. It was a very appropriate book to read. On the global strike of 8 March.
