Conflict Favorites Goxuak in San Sebastian
  • Garazi Castaño, a member of the Governing Council of Navarre, decided to organize herself in the face of the need for new instruments to deal with the precariousness of the work of young people. The group emerged in the context of the Gazteria aiki meetings that took place before the summer of 2017 in the Huertas Florales de Ulia and in the gaztetxe Txantxarreka. They see their work compatible with trade unionism, and they want to create networks of solidarity with people who do not arrive to give a collective solution to the situation.

In Donostia-San Sebastian, the fight focuses on the Gustoko Goxuak coffee shop chain, which has its place in Gipuzkoa Square. “It has come very well, with many testimonies, that the precariousness is very broad and that many workers are not properly paid.” They are glad to see that the issue is gaining fame, “but we still have to manage to articulate the struggle effectively so that they pay the workers who owe them money. We need to bring more people together in this protest to increase pressure,” he says.

Castaños would point out that when they enter the cafeteria to hand over the handbooks to their clients, the former workers Olaia and Maddi, who explain their specific case, generate “very powerful moments”. “Many people only know precariousness through the press or in a global way, but when they are told firsthand what they have done and what they do in that same place, both the situation and the political reasons are explained very humanely.”

They are related to the agents that have emerged in the Basque Country with similar approaches: Bilboko Eragin, the self-defense of Hernani, the Protection Network of the Region of Pamplona and the Young Workers of the Region, among others.
