The breath of the corners of the houses
Amaia Alvarez Uria 2017ko abenduaren 27a
Bihotz handiegia. Eider Rodriguez. Susa, 2017

The last collection of stories Eider Rodríguez has given us is composed of six narratives that invite us to delve into the particular universe of this writer. In it, the protagonists look at a close person, who may be a former husband, a neighbor or a mother, and show us the brown colors of their laces or yarns, showing their relationship with themselves: “You humiliated yourself publicly to shine by your side.”

Women are all the protagonists and through their eyes we will see the worlds that surround them. These small cosmos usually have four walls, so we will enter different houses and we will be able to enjoy a clear and dizzy view or a closed environment and very intense aromas. In fact, the senses, especially the smell, will be of great importance in these narratives along with the emotions, as the sensations gathered in different situations will cause the characters to flout over and over again. “There was a clash between the silences of the two when the refrigerator was closed.”

Rare and special words will appear on more than one occasion, as well as their definitions, as the borders and folds of these everyday scenarios will question the reality or the perception of normality. Finally, and in relation to the above, the narrator's statements and comments will show the differences between people, offering an X-ray of middle-class women about the appearance of some of their concerns and concerns: “You played the role of middle-aged canonical woman.”

In short, we will feel the breath of the corners of the houses on these pages. As in the stories of Carver or Munro, Rodríguez will allow us to enter strange houses to know the lives of ordinary people and discover their “monstrosities”. On the corners of these houses, bodies will strip us away, and space nuances some limits. We will feel in the skin the breath of the corners of the houses, which will sometimes be soft and the thin stench, which will bring us the uncomfortable moments of life so that we reflect on each other's body and way of life, because what surrounds us is not as clear, as firm as it seems: “Everything goes horribly the same.”
