Paris is worth a Mass (*)
Mikel Asurmendi @masurmendi 2017ko abenduaren 13a

Politics and religion have many characteristics in common. They need convictions, honesty as well. But in the depths of politics there is cunning, Machiavism; the reason for the state is above all being.

The history of the demonstration of 9 December 2107 in Paris began in 1958 with the creation of ETA. In order to understand the current political conflict, it is necessary to recall some characteristics of the evolution of ETA: ETA was born from the insides of the town and had in the North a “shrine” to establish its roots. In the framework of the Local Enbata and IK movements, among others.

In order to understand the current peace process and the initiative for the freedom of Basque prisoners, which is fundamental to its implementation, we must remember a few milestones: for example, the Burgos process of 1970 and the Freedom Route of 1977. Both were victories, both for the sovereignty of this people and for those who fought for that goal.

Since then, there has never been any effective progress in achieving these two objectives. However, following the final announcement of the armed activity by ETA, some steps have been taken. The Declaration of Aiete, the acts of Luhuso and Baiona – the disarmament of ETA – have opened the way for the process of normalisation in this conflict without a negotiated solution. It was not a coincidence, but causality. The first step was in Aiete, in Gipuzkoa. For a while the Abertzale left managed power in the territory. It is no coincidence that this type of peace process has been carried out in Ipar Euskal Herria, since the influence of the conflict has been different and the “culture of democracy” has been rooted in it in a different way, both in society and in the State of which it depends.

In the political game of the two states rooted in the depths of Euskal Herria, France seems to want to take the initiative once and for all. However, the key to resolving the conflict is Spain. The needs of the warring fighters (their liberation) have long been confronted with the needs of this people in favour of their sovereignty. A clear indicator of the correlations of conflicting forces.

At the same time a demonstration was held in favour of the Basque prisoners at the Madeleine Church where the funeral of musician Johnny Hallyday was held. At 13:00, it was the first and only news in the French media of Operation Púnica. Like the old Church, as well as the current media, the two pillars of the state.

(*) The legend “Paris is worth a Mass” is Henry IV of France and Henry III of Navarra. The phrase is also topical and the apocryphum.
