The Basque prisoners Didier Agerre, Ibon Fernández Iradi, Itziar Plaza, Jon Bienzobas, Zigor Garro, Asier Borrero and Jon Salaberria were sentenced on 12 November to the withdrawal of DPS status. The withdrawal of these prisoners from the list, particularly those mentioned, has opened the hope for those who work to ensure the peace process. It can be understood as the first result of the “working framework” opened between the French Ministry of Justice and the Basque Delegation. According to Bake Bidea, the demonstration in Paris will be a further step in the fight against violence.
The issue of prisoners is on the agenda of the representatives of the French Government and the Basque delegation, but it has so far been treated with caution. Participants discussed "channelling sick prisoners well", "bringing them closer" or "the situation of those ending their sentences", among other issues. Among the demands of the Basque delegation is to provide a satisfactory solution to these problems.
The release of the seven prisoners from the DPS enclosure should be considered an important step. First of all, this measure facilitates the daily lives of prisoners and their freedom of movement. For example, DPS status has so far prevented representatives of the EPPK (Group of Basque Political Prisoners) from acting effectively.
Now, the question is how can the Spanish Government's unmoving attitude be influenced by this change of measure coming from the French State?
