Pharaoh is a great house
  • The word per-aah means “great house” in Egyptian. Pharaoh lived, of course, in a large house, and the word appears in the writings of the oldest dynasties naming his palace.

The per-aa became par’oh in Hebrew and Greek pharao. Hence the word Pharaoh, but designates the king of Egypt, not his house. Today in Egypt it is also known as per-aa, but its use is quite “new”.
