Quality of care in the elderly
- The majority of the population knows, directly and indirectly, the situation of public and semi-public residences, which are the end of many people's lives. Those who know them directly, except for some exceptions, are well aware of their limitations and deficiencies and witness a low quality of care. Undoubtedly, one of the causes of this situation is the lack of staff and greed in wages and in social policies.
The long strikes over 300 days of working women in the residences of Bizkaia and the uninterrupted demonstrations – which also took place last week in front of the Basque Parliament – have shown us a reality that cannot be concealed. It has also pronounced itself on the responsibility of the Foral Council of Bizkaia, which has refused to negotiate with the strikers in the foral parliament. Some 5,000 people work in Bizkaia to care for 7,500 people, who have denounced the precariousness, the tiring days, the very low salaries and the shortage of workers. They claim a salary of EUR 1,200, a 35-hour working week and a one-year increase in staff. And they claim that they intend to continue the strike to achieve these goals. They have recently reached an agreement with the main company of nursing homes.
Some family members of older people may be sick of the strike. But in general, it seems that the majority not only respects the strike, but also supports it, because with these demands they are also defending the well-being of their relatives and many other people who will eventually end up in the nursing home. Above all, there is the care and quality of care we provide to our elderly. Politicians should know this and take steps to put resources in place. One of these measures is that this long strike will end well.
