Rewarding the invisible
Surely my old students will know the anecdote I'm going to tell you next. What I've repeated the most is that, at least for me, it brought a great lesson.
The first film we directed Carlos Zabala and I, Maité, was at the time of starting riding. The producer had organized herself in a small local in the Igara district, a job that we were going to spend many hours. The first day we were there, the assembler came in, Antonio Reina, and he asked us the following question: “What is the most important tool in this room?” At that time, 1994, the films are mounted on the mobiolan, cutting a 35-millimeter film with scissors and sticking with heat pieces. Carlos and I looked at each other and tried to figure out which of the instruments before us was the most important. We started naming. “Movie?” “No,” Antonio replied. “Mobiola?” “No.” “Screen?” “No.” “Scissors?” “No.” “Zeal?” “No.” Jode! So there were not much more instruments left than to mention... “Part of the shoot chamber?” “No.” Where was the trick? I don't know if that would be the case, but I imagine Antonio smiling at our stupid faces. And seeing that we didn't get close, he, looking at the table, pointed to the trash. “Recycle bin?” We. “Yes, the trash can,” he said, and “the more it is filled, the better the movie.”
Many times I've remembered that passage in my life and not only when I've assembled something. That passage has reminded me once again when I learned that they are going to deliver the Zinemira Prize of the Festival that is being held these days to Julia Juaniz. I've been very happy. Because I know it and because it represents, among many others, an invisible trade in our world. And also because she's a woman. It would take a long time to explain his resume, and here we don't have room for that, but he's been filling for years the trash of many renowned filmmakers. It is to be welcomed that he reminded Rebordinos and the same crew.
When it comes to distributing the prizes, we already have the Donostia Prize, symbol of the San Sebastian Festival, the chosen actors. On one occasion they gave Francis Ford Coppola and there are those who say why today they are always actors. Usually outsiders. But that's not the subject of today. The same is not true of cinema, as musicians and photo directors, makeup artists have been awarded... Maybe because it's harder to choose where? I want to think no. And that's why I've been glad. Because the movie world is filled with invisible workers like Julia. Anyway, we like to walk along the path that marks the red carpet. And it's a good excuse to wear an American jacket or a beautiful dress that we have in our closet. I will applaud you, Julia.
