Sovereignty for the implementation of social policies
- Last week, ELA and LAB, which make up the Basque trade union majority, took an important step in the representation of the action unit in favor of a “unilateral and social sovereign process.”
A significant step towards serving the interests of the Basque social majority. This is a recognizable and applausible initiative, as it may be a milestone towards the unity of the Basque trade unions.
There will be those who say that it is “entering” into the political arena, where the political parties say that they have to be the protagonists. Trade unions, however, have every right to demand social, economic and labour policies, which mostly affect a society made up of workers and pensioners. These policies are going to be who decides, better or worse. In this context, it is logical that they denounce: Dependence on the Spanish State is detrimental to workers and pensioners and, furthermore, the authorities have no desire to overcome this situation and bilaterality does not work. Consequently, the trade unions are in favour of a sovereign, unilateral and social process.
This wager will influence the decisions made in the process. That is why they say that “leftist alliances” are necessary. The lack of sovereignty has brought difficulties in collective bargaining, impoverished people, precarious work and diminished pensions. Through sovereignty and through the Basque trade union majority, social fiscal budgets and policies can be established, not at the service of the elites, but for the benefit of the majority of society. Only one type of sovereignty serves to do this: it has a strong social component.
